Planning your first trip to Transylvania in 2026? This old, fascinating region of Romania combines medieval towns, fortified churches, dramatic mountain landscapes, and living rural traditions. To make the most of your visit, a bit of smart planning goes a long way. Here are a few essential tips coming from a local tour guide to help you enjoy a smooth, rewarding, and authentic first encounter with Transylvania.

Where to Fly to in Romania?

For first-time visitors, flying directly into Transylvania is the most convenient option. The main airports serving the region are Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Târgu Mureș, and Brașov, all offering much easier access to Transylvanian destinations than flying into Bucharest and then driving for several hours north to Transylvania.

In 2026, Transylvania is better connected than ever, with direct flights linking major European cities to these regional airports. Depending on the season, you can find convenient connections from cities such as Paris, Berlin, London, Brussels, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid, Hamburg, Dortmund, Budapest, Warsaw, and Basel all operated by Wizz Air company. While Bucharest still offers the widest range of international connections, the transfer from Bucharest to Transylvania can easily take five to seven hours on busy days due to limited highway infrastructure. Flying directly into Transylvania saves valuable travel time and allows you to start exploring almost immediately.

If you plan a multi-day private tour in Transylvania, choosing the right arrival airport can significantly reduce long driving days and make your itinerary more relaxed from the very first day.

Best Times to Visit Transylvania

For pleasant weather and fewer crowds, May, June, September and October are among the best months to visit Transylvania in 2026. Spring offers fresh greenery and blooming landscapes, while early autumn brings warm colors and comfortable temperatures for walking tours and countryside exploration.

July and August are the busiest months, especially in popular towns such as Brașov, Sibiu, and Sighișoara. If your schedule is flexible, planning your trip outside peak summer can make your private Transylvania tour more enjoyable, with fewer crowds and a calmer pace at major landmarks.

How to Travel Within Transylvania

Transylvania’s beauty lies in its rural landscapes, traditional villages, and historic towns connected by scenic, winding roads. Public transport connects major cities reasonably well, but reaching fortified churches, remote villages, and countryside areas can be slow and most of the time impossible by public transportation system.

Renting a car offers flexibility, but many first-time visitors find driving long distances in an unfamiliar country tiring. Traveling with a local guide allows you to relax and focus on the experience while also gaining cultural and historical context that you simply wouldn’t get on your own. On a private multi-day tour, routes can be adjusted in real time based on weather, interests, and pace.

Booking Tips for 2026

Transylvania continues to grow in popularity among international travelers. Although the active front line of the war in Ukraine remains localized far from Romania’s borders, travel interest in Central and Eastern Europe has steadily increased in the last years. Transylvania itself remains a very safe and peaceful destination for visitors.

For 2026, booking accommodation and private tours in advance is recommended, especially for late spring, summer, and early autumn. Early planning allows for better availability, more choice of accommodation, and more flexibility in shaping a personalized itinerary rather than fitting into what remains available last minute.

If you are considering a custom private tour in Transylvania, early communication also helps in designing a route that avoids overly long driving days and focuses on what truly interests you.

Staying Connected: Internet & Communication

Staying connected in Romania is ultra easy and affordable. Local SIM cards from providers such as Orange, Vodafone or Digi offer generous data packages at low cost. Romania is known for fast and reliable internet, even in most rural areas, making it easy to navigate routes, stay in touch, and manage travel logistics during your journey. Estimate a 20 eur cost for a prepay that will offer you basically unlimited internet access for a month.

Final Tips for First-Time Visitors in 2026

One of Transylvania’s major advantages compared to Western Europe is value for money. Accommodation, dining, and especially private guided tours are generally more affordable, allowing you to enjoy personalized experiences without the premium prices often found in Western European destinations. This makes Transylvania particularly appealing for travelers who want depth, comfort, and flexibility without compromising on quality.

Rather than trying to see everything in a short time, allow space for slower travel, spontaneous stops, and conversations with locals. This is where Transylvania truly reveals itself.

If you would like help turning these tips into a well-balanced, relaxed itinerary, I’m happy to design a private multi-day Transylvania tour tailored to your pace, interests, and travel style. Ideally, the goal should be not just to visit Transylvania, but to experience it in a meaningful and memorable way.

1. Autonomy and Hierarchical Structure

One key aspect to understand about the Romanian Orthodox Church is its autocephalous status, meaning it independently manages its internal affairs without being subordinate to any other ecclesiastical authority. However, this doesn’t imply isolation; BOR is part of the larger Eastern Orthodox Church family, sharing the same faith and teachings while maintaining its own leadership.

At the top stands the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, followed by a structured hierarchy comprising Metropolises, Archdioceses, Dioceses, and at the local level—Deaneries, Parishes, and Monasteries. It’s fascinating to see how each level plays a role in maintaining both unity and local traditions. This well-organized structure ensures the Church’s presence even in rural areas, where it continues to be a cornerstone of community life.

2. Rich Liturgical Traditions and Beautiful Rituals

Orthodoxy is renowned for its deeply rooted traditions and the beauty of its rituals. One of the central elements of worship is the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, celebrated every Sunday and on major feast days. The atmosphere is often solemn, with Byzantine chants, incense, and radiant icons.

What has always fascinated me is how these rituals blend the senses with spirituality. The vocal music creates a meditative ambiance, while the sacred images, candles, and the fragrance of incense help worshippers connect with the deeper message of the Liturgy. This symbolic and aesthetic richness is captivating even for those outside the Orthodox faith.

3. Deep Historical Roots and Cultural Contributions

The Romanian Orthodox Church has played a crucial role in shaping and preserving national identity. Over the centuries, priests and hierarchs have been instrumental in translating and publishing books—including the first Bible in Romanian—establishing schools, and promoting Romanian as a liturgical language.

Few people know that some of the earliest printed texts in Romanian were created to meet the Church’s needs. For example, the first Romanian book, edited under the guidance of Deacon Coresi in the 16th century, was intended for liturgical and catechetical use. These cultural contributions have strengthened spiritual unity and linguistic identity, ensuring that faith and moral values are passed down through generations.

4. Romanian Saints and Local Veneration

Another fascinating aspect of BOR is its veneration of local saints, honored for their faith and exceptional deeds. One famous example is Saint Constantin Brâncoveanu, a ruler of Wallachia who was martyred alongside his four sons in 1714 in Istanbul. In Romania, these saints are not just historical figures but also enduring role models of faith and dignity.

The veneration of saints in Orthodoxy highlights the continuous bond between the faithful on Earth and those who, according to belief, dwell in heavenly glory. To better understand this, visiting a Romanian monastery is worthwhile, where local saint icons often include iconographic elements and historical details unique to the national context.

5. Social and Philanthropic Engagement

While discussions about the Church often focus on power and influence, its contribution to social and philanthropic work is truly remarkable. Whether through centers for children and the elderly, community kitchens, or charitable initiatives at the parish level, BOR has numerous projects aimed at supporting local communities.

For instance, various Orthodox associations and foundations provide psychological counseling, spiritual guidance, and financial aid to those in need. In a world increasingly marked by social inequalities, these efforts continue to serve as a vital link between the Church and civil society.

6*. Key Differences Between Orthodox and Catholic Churches

While both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches share common Christian roots, there are significant theological, liturgical, and cultural differences between them. One of the most notable distinctions is the concept of authority—Orthodoxy upholds a decentralized model with autocephalous churches, whereas Catholicism recognizes the Pope as the supreme authority. Another key difference lies in the interpretation of original sin; Orthodox theology emphasizes the healing and transformative nature of salvation, while Catholicism focuses more on the concept of inherited guilt.

Liturgical practices also differ, with the Orthodox Church maintaining a more mystical and symbolic approach, including the extensive use of icons, incense, and Byzantine chant. In contrast, Catholicism tends to incorporate a more structured and uniform liturgy. Additionally, the Orthodox Church allows married priests, whereas the Catholic Church generally requires clerical celibacy.

Despite these differences, both traditions share a deep reverence for Christ, the Holy Scriptures, and the rich history of Christian faith.

Conclusion

I hope these insights have given you a fresh perspective on the Romanian Orthodox Church. It’s more than history and rituals—it’s a vibrant part of Romanian life, rooted in culture and community. If you’re curious to learn more, feel free to reach out.

Who Was Vlad the Impaler?

Vlad III, commonly referred to as Vlad the Impaler, was born in 1431 in the Transylvanian town of Sighișoara. As a prince of Wallachia, Vlad was born into a world of political turbulence, with constant threats from the Ottoman Empire and power struggles within his own family. His father, Vlad II Dracul, was a member of the Order of the Dragon, a group sworn to defend Christianity in Eastern Europe, which is where the name “Dracula” originated. In Romanian, the word “dracu” meaning evil, is very close to the Latin word “draco” meaning dragon.
At a young age, Vlad and his younger brother, Radu, were sent to the Ottoman Empire as political hostages and collaterals for his father`s position as ruler of Wallachia. This experience profoundly impacted Vlad, shaping his perception of loyalty, trust, and ruthlessness. In the years that followed, he returned to Wallachia, fiercely determined to rule and defend his land from enemies. Vlad’s brutal methods in warfare and governance earned him the title of “Vlad the Impaler,” a nickname that would later play a key role in inspiring the Dracula legend.

The Brutal Methods of Vlad the Impaler

Vlad’s rule is remembered not only for his military accomplishments but also for his terrifying methods of punishment. The most infamous was impalement—a brutal form of execution that involved skewering victims on long wooden stakes. This slow killing method served as a powerful psychological weapon, instilling fear in both his enemies and his own people. Vlad used impalement on a massive scale, reportedly leaving “forests” of impaled bodies as warnings to would-be invaders, particularly the advancing Ottoman Turks.
But while his tactics may seem barbaric by today’s standards, they were effective in the context of his time. Vlad’s ruthlessness in defending Wallachia won him respect among his allies and fear among his enemies. Some accounts even suggest that he achieved a level of peace and order rarely seen in the region. Foreign travelers and ambassadors recorded stories of Vlad’s iron-fisted rule, describing his reputation as both a cruel tyrant and a protector of his people.

From Vlad to Dracula: The Origins of the Legend

The transition from Vlad the Impaler to Count Dracula began centuries after Vlad’s death. In 1897, Irish author Bram Stoker published Dracula, a novel that would change the vampire genre forever. Although Stoker never visited Transylvania, he borrowed Vlad’s surname—Dracula—and used elements of Vlad’s reputation to craft the character of the vampiric count. The name itself added a sense of authenticity to Stoker’s story, tying it to an allegedly dark and mysterious region of Europe.
Eastern European folklore significantly influenced the creation of the Dracula myth. In this region, many believed that the souls of those burdened by heavy sins couldn’t rise to the skies after death. Instead, they would remain earthbound, unable to find peace, and might even haunt the living as supernatural beings. These restless spirits, often referred to as vampires, were deeply feared. Bram Stoker drew inspiration from these chilling beliefs, intertwining them with the violent history of Vlad the Impaler. The result was a character both terrifying and seemingly rooted in historical truth—a vampire who embodied both folklore and the brutal reality of the past.

Myths vs. Facts: Dissecting the Dracula Legend

As with any figure shrouded in legend, myths about Vlad the Impaler are abundant. While Vlad was certainly ruthless, there’s no historical evidence to suggest he drank blood or had supernatural powers. Instead, these stories likely stem from cultural fascination with the macabre, exaggerated over time by storytellers and popular media.
For example, tales of Vlad’s alleged vampiric tendencies likely evolved from his reputation as a “bloodthirsty” ruler who took pleasure in watching his enemies suffer. In reality, Vlad’s brutality was a calculated form of psychological warfare rather than a form of personal sadism. Still, these embellished stories reveal much about human fascination with darkness and power

Sites and Experiences for Visitors: Retracing Vlad’s Footsteps

For those intrigued by Vlad’s legacy, there are numerous sites in Romania that offer a deeper understanding of his life and legend. Visitors can follow in his footsteps, exploring castles, fortresses, and medieval towns that preserve his memory and bring the Dracula story to life.
1. Poenari Fortress: A true stronghold of Vlad’s, this fortress offers a glimpse into the defensive architecture of the time and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
2. Bran Castle: While not directly connected to Vlad, the castle’s gothic allure and dramatic setting draw thousands of visitors each year eager to experience “Dracula’s castle.”
3. Sighișoara: The birthplace of Vlad, Sighișoara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, complete with winding streets, medieval architecture, and vibrant festivals celebrating the region’s history.
4. Snagov Monastery: Thought to be Vlad’s final resting place, Snagov is an ideal place for history enthusiasts to reflect on Vlad’s complex legacy and his place in Romanian folklore.

Conclusions

The story of Vlad the Impaler is one of history, myth, and legend. While his life was marked by brutality, it was also defined by resilience and a commitment to his homeland. The Dracula legend may exaggerate Vlad’s dark side, but his real story remains compelling, painting a portrait of a complex man caught between legend and reality.
So, if you’re intrigued by the real story behind the Dracula myth, there’s no better way to experience it than by exploring Transylvania’s castles, fortresses, and medieval towns.

Transylvania 2025: Essential Guide for First-Time Visitors

1. Where to Fly to in Romania?
For first-time visitors to Romania, flying directly into Transylvania is best. The major airports in the region: Cluj Napoca, Sibiu, Targu Mures, and the newly opened Brasov airport, offer convenient access without the long, often crowded commute from Bucharest, the capital town of Romania. Although Bucharest’s airport has more international flights, the drive to Transylvania’s nearest town, Brasov, can stretch to five hours on a busy day due to a lack of highways between Transylvania and Bucharest. Opting for these Transylvanian airports will save precious time and offer a more seamless start to your journey.

2.Best Times to Visit Transylvania
For pleasant weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting Transylvania in May or September. These months allow you to enjoy the stunning landscapes, historic towns, and outdoor attractions without the peak summer rush. Spring brings colorful blooms and mild weather, while autumn lights up the region in breathtaking fall colors. Winter also has its charm with festive celebrations and snow-dusted medieval castles, but it’s best suited to those ready for the chilly, quiet season.

3.How to Travel Within Transylvania
Transylvania’s charm lies in its scenic routes and winding roads between quaint villages, medieval castles, and vast natural reserves. While buses and trains connect many major towns, they can be slow and infrequent. Renting a car offers the freedom to explore at your own pace, from hidden villages to forested trails. If driving in a new country feels daunting, you can book a guided tour with a local tour guide who knows the region’s best-kept secrets and can offer cultural insights.

4.Booking Tips for 2025
The soon end of the Ukrainian conflict is expected to boost Eastern European tourism in 2025. To secure the best options for accommodation, flights, and tours, it’s wise to book well in advance. Romania, Bulgaria, and neighboring countries are anticipating a tourist influx, so early planning ensures a smoother, more affordable experience, especially in high-demand areas of Transylvania.

5.Staying Connected: Internet & Communication
Staying connected in Romania is both easy and inexpensive. For around €5, you can get a local GSM SIM card from Vodafone or Orange that includes over 60GB of data, along with thousands of national and international minutes. Romania is known for its fast, affordable internet, so whether you’re navigating routes, sharing travel highlights, or keeping in touch with family, your connection will be reliable and budget-friendly.

Final Tips
With its medieval towns, enchanting castles, and rich history, Transylvania is a must-see for any traveler. Planning early, dressing for varied weather, and exploring at your own pace are keys to a fulfilling experience. For a seamless and insightful journey, consider booking a tour with Your Guide in Transylvania.

From Anatolia to Altar: The Legacy of Ottoman Carpets in Transylvania

Historically, during the Middle Ages, Transylvania was situated on the border between the West and East. It was a frontier area in both senses and was mainly inhabited by Saxon settlers from the Rhine and Moselle regions, invited with privileges by the Hungarian king Geza II to create a human buffer zone securing the eastern border of the Hungarian Kingdom. The Saxon settlers brought with them a culture based on labor and community spirit, which, paradoxically, 7 centuries later, turns Transylvania into one of the most famous tourist destinations in Eastern Europe.

Transylvania today, in the 21st century, boasts the world’s largest concentration of medieval fortified churches, alongside castles and noble residences. In several of the over 150 fortified churches in Transylvania, tourists can probably admire the last examples of symbols of wealth and medieval refinement in this part of the world, preserved “in situ”, namely, the Oriental carpets. These can be admired in the evangelical churches of Sibiu, Mediaș, Bistrița, Sighișoara, Biertan, and others, but the largest collection of Oriental carpets in the world outside Turkey can be found at the Black Church in Brașov.

The Black Church’s collection comprises around two hundred Ottoman carpets. Most are part of the church’s historical heritage. Approximately 50 pieces arrived here during the 20th century, after the collapse of communism and the mass emigration of ethnic Saxons to Germany. They were brought from the Saxon churches in the villages around Brașov to be maintained and cared for. The term “Ottoman” refers both to their origin and their age. All carpets produced in the Ottoman Empire during the Ottoman dynasty (1326-1922) are generically called “Ottoman carpets”. Ottoman carpets are mostly made of wool. From the warp and weft threads, a textile structure was created on the weaving loom into which knots were inserted. These knots were then cut, a procedure that resulted in a fluffy pile.

Why Ottoman carpets in Christian churches in Transylvania?

Their presence in evangelical churches represents a paradox considering the ongoing military and religious confrontation throughout the Middle Ages between the Muslim world and Christianity. It should be noted, however, that this is not an isolated case in the evangelical churches of Transylvania. In almost all of Western Europe, in Catholic and Protestant churches, Oriental textiles such as silk, gold-brocaded velvet, mohair, linen, and others were used in the medieval period for the making of priestly vestments. Outside Transylvania, most of these Ottoman textiles have gradually disappeared from churches over time. The Ottoman carpets that still exist today in some evangelical churches in Transylvania represent the last authentic example linked to what maximum opulence meant in the medieval period, their presence in the sacred space meant to bring glory and praise to God.

Where were these Oriental carpets produced?

The Ottoman carpets existing today in Transylvania were made in a region in western Anatolia, in the upper valley surrounded by mountains of the Gediz River. Here were the main carpet workshops, in places like Bergama, Ușak, Kula, Gördes, Demirci, or Selendi. From here, the carpets were transported along land trade routes to reach Western Europe.

Along these trade routes, numerous spices from the East such as pepper, saffron, and ginger, textiles such as linen, mohair, or taffeta reached Brașov from the East. Among the many goods passing through Brașov on their way to Western Europe were often carpets. The city of Brașov collected its trade taxes under what was called “the right of staple,” which meant that passing merchants were obliged to offer all wares at fair prices in the town market, this way locals had full access to goods from Orient. Because Ottoman textiles were opulent and extremely expensive, they were highly appreciated in Transylvanian cities.

How were they used in their region of origin?

Initially, Turkish nomads from Anatolia (Turkmen or Yörük) worked them as substitutes for the furs used to cover the floors of tents. They also played an important role in religious rituals and prayers. A devout Muslim prays five times a day, kneeling on a carpet, facing Mecca. The carpet thus becomes a symbol of the formal isolation of the one immersed in prayer. In European countries, Oriental carpets completely lost their role in their region of origin.

How were they used in the Evangelical churches of Transylvania?

Considering their origin and initial destination, that of Muslim prayer rugs, the natural question arises: how were they used in Transylvanian churches? Here they had a strictly decorative role, used primarily to cover the altar and decorate the pulpit, as well as the benches belonging to the wealthier guilds. They thus had the role of highlighting the most important points in the Church. Additionally, they also served as symbols of the social status of the Transylvanian Saxon communities. Their number also reflected the prosperity of the respective faithful community, blessed by God.

Where is Transylvania?

Transylvania is the most important historical region located central Romania, Eastern Europe, known for its picturesque landscapes, its medieval towns and castles, including Bran Castle, associated with the Dracula legend.
Transylvania extends over 100,284 square kilometers, an area comparable to that of Switzerland or the U.S. state of New York.

I want to make it clear from the beginning that this post applies more to travelers from outside Europe who intend to visit Europe and especially Transylvania during 2024.

I have been working in the past 15 years mostly with non EU tourists such as, Americans, Australians, Asians, etc and I have a good idea of how difficult it is for travelers to understand Europe and to plan a trip accordingly.

How safe is Europe?

According to 2023 Global Peace Index of The Institute for Economics and Peace, Europe remains the safest region in the world, home to 7 out of 10 most peaceful countries in the world.

There’s a common misconception that Europe is divided simply into “West” and “East,” with the former being more developed and “civilized” than the latter. This oversimplified categorization fails to capture the captivating diversity and the exceptional charm that make Eastern Europe a fascinating destination.

Eastern Europe, encompassing countries like Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, and the Balkan states, boasts a fascinating history shaped by the Byzantine, Ottoman, and Slavic influence. This heritage has left its mark on the region’s culture, architecture, and traditions, creating a tapestry of experiences that are distinctly different from those found in Western Europe.

Contrary to common perceptions, especially for a former Communist country, Romania’s crime levels are relatively low, placing it 16th among 42 European countries on Numbeo’s Crime Index 2023, even outperforming France, Italy, Germany, and Luxembourg.

According to World Population Review Index 2024, crime rate in Romania, not one of the top 7 in Europe is 28.3 compared with 47.8 (per 100k inhabitants) in United States of America. One could conclude that, for Americans, apparently it is far safer to travel through Romania than to live in US.

How safe is Transylvania?

Transylvania stands today as the most important region in Romania, both culturally and economically, with significant natural resources, agriculture, and tourism.

It is by far the safest part of Romania according to all surveys and one of Europe’s most secure destinations. Three out of five Romanian cities ranked in top 100 in the world are located in Transylvania. They are: Cluj Napoca, Timisoara and Brasov. They are also among the top 10 safest cities in Europe.

In strong contrast to other countries, gun violence is virtually unheard of in Romania due to Romania having some of the strictest gun laws in the world. These laws, have effectively restricted the accessibility of firearms, making it extremely difficult for individuals to acquire them even with proper authorization.

The origins of the Gabor gypsies are somewhat unclear, but it is believed that they migrated to Hungary from India in the 14th or 15th century. They are known for their skilled craftsmanship, particularly in metalworking and woodworking, and their traditional dress includes brightly colored fabrics and ornate jewelry.
One of the most notable aspects of Gabor gypsy culture is their music. They have a unique musical tradition that combines elements of Oriental music with Roma musical styles. Gabor gypsy music is characterized by its use of the cimbalom, a hammered dulcimer, and the violin, as well as complex rhythms and improvisation.
Despite their contributions to European culture, the Gabor gypsies have long faced discrimination and persecution. During World War II, many were sent to concentration camps, and in the years since, they have continued to face discrimination in housing, employment, and education.

Gabor gypsy music has had a significant impact on Hungarian culture, and many Hungarian musicians have been influenced by their style. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in Gabor gypsy music, both in Hungary, Transylvania and internationally. Musicians such as Kálmán Balogh and Parno Graszt have gained popularity, and there are now festivals and concerts dedicated to celebrating Gabor gypsy music.

Despite the challenges they face, the Gabor gypsies have a rich and vibrant culture that continues to thrive. Their music, craftsmanship, and traditional dress are an important part of European culture, and it is important to acknowledge and celebrate their contributions.

Transylvania, located in central Romania, is a region that has captured the imagination of travelers for centuries. From its rich history and folklore to its stunning natural landscapes, Transylvania offers a unique and unforgettable experience for anyone who visits. If you’re planning your travels for 2023, here are seven reasons why Transylvania should be at the top of your list.

The History
Transylvania is steeped in history, from its medieval towns to its ancient castles. The region has been inhabited for thousands of years, and its past is reflected in the numerous cultural and historical sites that can be found throughout the region. From the fortified Saxon city of Sighisoara to the legendary Bran Castle, Transylvania offers a wealth of history to explore.

The Scenery
Transylvania’s natural scenery is breathtaking, with rolling hills, forests, and mountains that are a hiker’s paradise. The Carpathian Mountains are particularly stunning, with hiking trails that offer spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The region is also home to numerous national parks and protected areas, where visitors can experience some of the most unspoiled wilderness in Europe.

The Culture
Transylvania’s diverse culture is a reflection of its history, with influences from Romanian, Saxon, and Hungarian traditions. Visitors can experience the region’s unique cuisine, music, and traditional crafts, which are still practiced today. The town of Sibiu, in particular, is known for its cultural festivals and events, which celebrate the region’s heritage.

The Wine
Transylvania is home to some of Romania’s best wineries, with a long tradition of winemaking that dates back centuries. The region’s rolling hills and temperate climate make it ideal for growing grapes, and visitors can sample some of the finest wines produced in Romania. The vineyards around Tarnaveni are particularly renowned, with tours and tastings available for visitors.

The People
Transylvania is known for its warm and welcoming people, who are always eager to share their culture and traditions with visitors. Whether you’re exploring a medieval town or hiking in the mountains, you’re sure to encounter friendly locals who will make you feel at home.

The Festivals
Transylvania is home to numerous festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating everything from traditional crafts to medieval history. The Sighisoara Medieval Festival, held every summer, is one of the region’s most popular events, with street performers, reenactors, and traditional food and drink on offer. The Alba Iulia Music and Film Festival is another popular event, featuring live music, film screenings, and other cultural events.

The Dracula Connection
Of course, no visit to Transylvania would be complete without exploring the region’s connection to the famous vampire, Dracula. Bram Stoker‘s novel was inspired by the region’s folklore and history, and visitors can explore the legend by visiting Bran Castle, said to have been the inspiration for Dracula’s castle. The town of Brasov is also home to numerous sites connected to the Dracula legend, including the Black Church and the Council House.

In conclusion, Transylvania is a region that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Gabor Gypsies, even the poorest of them, are considered as the aristocratic caste of Roma community in Transylvania and they live in settled communities.

Tourism is finally recovering in Transylvania after Covid so during 2022 I again lead several private tours for American, Swiss, English, etc tourists in different Transylvanian Gabor Gypsies Roma communities. I learned once more that in a completely globalized word relying on internet and technology the occidental tourists interest for this eclectic, ultra-traditionalist community is actually growing.

Gabor women always wearing their folk costume with long very colorful skirts will never go unnoticed, and actually most of the tourists questions are related to women of this community not the men.
I will share with you several insights I have learned about the women of this community while leading tours throughout the years, with a very important notice, that they do not apply to all the members of Gabor Gypsy communities in Transylvania.

A Gabor Gypsy Girl will never cut her hair throughout her life. Until she is married her hair will always be embroidered with red ribbons to keep the evil eye away.

A married Gabor woman will always have her head covered with a scarf. During the wedding ceremony her husband will cover her head for the first time and from that moment onwards, for the rest of her life no other man is allowed to see her hair apart from her husband.

In Gabor Culture a woman is supposed to expose as little of her skin as possible. That is why even during the hottest summer days they will usually wear the long sleeved blouses.

All Gabor girls go to school at least till the age of 10 – 11 years old, when they are taken out of school. Usually the boys keep studying till the age of 14 or later.

Girls get married very young somewhere between 12 and 16 years old. After the marriage the young Gabor girl will always move into groom`s house and continue to live with her parents in law. Interestingly, the young couple live together in the boy`s parents house and they are treated more as brother and sister than husband and wife during the firsts years especially when they are very young.

Arranged marriages still exists today based on Gabor cast system similar with the one in India. Wealth and rank are not synonyms, rank is inherited, every family want to marry into a higher class and they are also willing to pay for this.

If the bride is homesick or simply she can`t integrate into her husband`s family she is allowed to return home to her parent`s house.

The Gabor marriage can be dissolved if the couple does not produce any male offspring.

A Gabor woman will always stay at home with the children, she will never have any kind of job throughout her life. Usually a Gabor woman around the age of 35 will be a grandmother and around the age of 50 she will be a great grandmother.

Most of Gabor marriages have nothing to do with the state or church. They are agreements between families.

If you you are interested in learning more about the Gabor Gypsies Roma of Transylvania a smart idea would be to book a private “Discover Gabor Gypsies” tour.
